WASHINGTON - Thousands of people wanting to send a message that racism isn't welcome in the United States gathered in a park outside the White House to protest a white nationalist rally on the anniversary of the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The police chief in Washington, D.C., says only one person was arrested after a chaotic day of protests and counterprotests centered around a white nationalist rally in front of the White House.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser hailed the police department's performance Sunday, saying it was "successful in allowing the First Amendment activities to happen while maintaining peace.

The several dozen white supremacists who showed up outside the White House on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of their movement's violent gathering in Charlottesville, Va. were overwhelmingly outnumbered by thousands of counter-protesters.
For the anti-racist and anti-fascist demonstrators, it was a successful attempt to wrest the narrative away from the alt-right, who had initially expected the gathering - called Unite the Right 2 and organized by prominent white nationalist Jason Kessler - to draw as many as 400.
