WASHINGTON - Just in time for tax day: The IRS website to make payments is down. But you still have to pay your taxes.
The IRS did not have an immediate explanation for the failure.
It appears, based on a message on the site, that the online payment system became unavailable at 2:50 A.M. ET on Tuesday.

The IRS has been unable to accept millions of direct tax return payments Tuesday, the last day of tax filing season, because of a technical glitch, the agency's chief said. The IRS receives about 150 million tax returns annually and had gotten about 120 million of them before Tuesday, so up to the remaining 30 million could be affected, acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter told reporters.
