China sentences Canadian man to death in drug smuggling case

BEIJING - A Chinese court has sentenced a Canadian man to death in a drug smuggling case.
A court in Dalian in northeastern Liaoning province announced Monday evening that it has given Robert Lloyd Schellenberg the death penalty.
The sentence comes after China detained two Canadians in December in apparent retaliation for Canada's arrest of a Chinese technology executive.
Schellenberg was detained in 2014 and initially sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2016 on charges of being an accessory to drug smuggling. But last month an appeals court agreed with prosecutors who said the sentence was...

CHICAGO - The convicted gunman in the Hadiya Pendleton murder will be sentenced Monday.
Micheail Ward faces 50 years to life in prison. He was convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated battery following a two-week trial in August.
A separate jury found getaway driver Kenneth Williams guilty. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
Pendleton was fatally shot in January 2013 while hanging out with friends in a Kenwood park about a mile from former President Barack Obama's home. She was 15.

Jake Patterson To Make First Court Appearance Monday Afternoon

BARRON, Wis. - Jake Patterson, the western Wisconsin man suspected of kidnapping Jayme Closs and killing her parents nearly three months ago, is slated to make his first court appearance on Monday afternoon.
The 21-year-old is accused of abducting the 13-year-old girl on Oct. 15, when police found her parents shot dead in their Barron home.
Last week, Jayme escaped a home in Gordon, which is about 65 miles north of Barron, and police arrested Patterson just minutes later, after Jayme gave them a description of his car.

Italian fugitive arrives home to serve life term for murder

ROME - A left-wing Italian militant who was convicted of murder three decades ago arrived in Rome on Monday to serve a life prison sentence, after his life as a celebrity fugitive came to an abrupt end with his arrest in Bolivia by a team of Interpol agents.
An Italian military aircraft carrying Cesare Battisti landed at Rome's Ciampino airport shortly after 11:30 a.m. after an overnight flight from Bolivia. As snipers kept close watch, Battisti emerged and descended from the plane, surrounded by police.
