Polish president rejected call from US Secretary of State

One year ago   |   By

WARSAW, Poland - Aides to Polish President Andrzej Duda have tacitly confirmed media reports that the president recently refused to accept a call from then-U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
The news reports say Tillerson was calling to discuss with Duda possible U.S. action over a new Polish law that makes it a crime to falsely attribute the Holocaust crimes of Nazi Germany to Poland. The U.S. fears it could violate free speech.
Some days later, Duda endorsed the law, but also asked a top court to check if. The verdict may take months to come.
Asked about the reports Tuesday, Duda's...

President Trump to Replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson With Mike Pompeo

One year ago   |   By

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was ousted Tuesday after months of strained relations with President Donald Trump, who sometimes used tweets to disparage the former Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO's efforts at international diplomacy.
The move comes as Trump is about to embark on historic and high-stakes talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump said he's nominating CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace Tillerson. Deputy CIA Director Gina Haspel will succeed Pompeo, becoming the first woman to lead the agency, Trump said.
"I am proud to nominate the Director of the Central Intelligence...

Trump says he fired Tillerson due to a disagreement over the Iran deal

One year ago   |   By

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he dismissed Rex Tillerson as secretary of state at least in part over a disagreement on how best to proceed with the Iran deal.
"When you look at the Iran deal, I thought it was terrible. He thought it was okay. I wanted to either break it or do something, he felt a little differently," Trump said.
Trump campaigned on ripping up the Iran deal, but has so far only decertified it, rather than removing the US as a party to the agreement.

White House announces Tillerson's ouster just hours after he criticizes Russia

One year ago   |   By

President Trump announced Tuesday morning that Rex Tillerson is out as Secretary of State. The White House claimed it informed Tillerson he was being asked to step down on Friday, which may explain why he broke from the White House Monday when he condemned Russia for the poisoning of a British spy. Conversely, CNN also reported that Tillerson said that he only learned he was out from Trump's tweet Tuesday morning.
Sergie Skripal and his daughter, Tulia, were poisoned with a nerve agent developed in Russia last Sunday and remain in critical condition. Prime Minister Theresa May responded by...
