Trump's Global Bigotry

5 monthes ago   |   By

Meeting with leaders from both parties yesterday to craft a bipartisan immigration deal, President Donald Trump uttered words that are likely to define his presidency. When lawmakers raised the issue of protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries, the president reportedly asked , “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He added, “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.” He suggested the United States should take more immigrants from countries like Norway. Trump tweeted a partial denial on Friday. The language used by me at the...

The real people behind Trump's 'shithole' comment

5 monthes ago   |   By

When word leaked out of President Donald Trump's reference to “shithole countries” in a meeting with lawmakers this week, it immediately swamped news coverage of immigration, giving a racially tinged spin to an issue that was already loaded politically. It also crowded out discussion of a real decision he made earlier this week that affects real people. Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it was revoking a special immigration status for some 200,000 Salvadorans that have worked and lived in the United States since 2001 after an earthquake struck El...

President Donald Trump is once again extending the Iran nuclear deal, but “this is the last such waiver he will issue” unless the deal is strengthened by Congress and European allies, a senior administration official said Friday. Trump is designating 14 Iranian individuals and entities with new sanctions unrelated to the nuclear deal, including the head of Iran's judiciary, the...

President Donald Trump met with a bipartisan group of senators Thursday, provocatively saying the United States should decline to admit immigrants from Haiti and African countries, or as he described them, “ shithole countries .” For various good reasons, the horror has been so great that the media has spent countless hours debating the merits of the president's comments, forcing legal departments to mull over decency laws.
Into Friday, the news cycle appeared to forget that the meeting was about immigration. But not immigrants. They are past the president's racist comments. They have...
