BOSTON - Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts left the game after hurting his left side making a throw to home plate during a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Sunday that cut Boston's magic number to two for a third straight AL East title.
Boston can clinch the division at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three seasons, needing only one win during a three-game series that opens Tuesday afternoon.

Three innings from Chris Sale was enough for the Red Sox to squeak past Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. The Mets scored three off the Sox' bullpen to tie it in the seventh inning, but Tzu-Wei Lin doubled and two batters later Andrew Benintendi hit a sacrifice fly to drive him home as the Sox held on for the series win. The Yankees also lost, which put the Sox 11-½ games up and lowered their magic number to just two as the Sox head to New York for a three game series in the Bronx starting on Tuesday.

Chris Sale throws three scoreless in second outing off DL

Chris Sale's second start back with the Red Sox was light and easy. Sale tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit against the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon to extend his scoreless streak to 32 straight innings. He struck out just one batter and averaged 95 mph on his four-seam fastball and 78 mph on his slider, down from his season average of 96 mph and 80 mph, respectively. His velocity was about the same in his first start off the disabled list on Tuesday, when he threw just one scoreless inning and struck out two.
