UK unemployment hits 5.1%, the highest in almost 5 years, as young workers bear brunt of Covid-19 restrictions

Official data released on Tuesday shows that UK unemployment reached a five-year high of 5.1 percent in the last quarter of 2020 as the government introduced its second Covid-19 induced lockdown.
The Office for National Statistics said that 1.74 million people were unemployed in the October to December period, an increase of 454,000 from the same quarter in 2019.
Tuesday's data also show that 726,000 fewer people are currently employed than there were before the start of the pandemic and that young people have disproportionately borne the brunt of the losses.

In a first for the UK, drones are being used to ship Covid-19 tests, personal protective equipment and other medical supplies between hospitals and health facilities in Scotland and islands off its coast.
The UK's Civil Aviation Authority has given permission to drone operator Skyports for the use of the drone flights following a test trial last year - and the mini aircraft this week began shipping supplies between National Health Service facilities in Argyll and the island of Bute. The French prime minister has called for “additional braking measures” in the northern city of Dunkirk amid a rapidly deteriorating situation with case rates soaring to almost five times above the national average.

The UK health secretary has warned that the government's roadmap out of the Covid-induced lockdown is dependent on data as he urged people in England to follow the rules in place in order to avoid the plan being slowed down.
