Judge: DACA legal advice must be made public

A federal judge in California on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to turn over emails, letters, memos and other materials related to its decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The order by U.S. District Judge William Alsup, based in San Francisco, also appears to cover legal advice about winding down the program, which grants quasi-legal status and work permits to so-called Dreamers. Acting in a series of lawsuits filed over the decision, the judge said the administration had waived its attorney-client privilege by claiming the decision was driven by...

Federal judge halts the third version of Trump's Muslim Ban

4 monthes ago   |   By

President Donald Trump has now revised his Muslim ban twice, both times in efforts to rescue the ban from court decisions halting at least some of its provisions. On Tuesday, however, a federal judge held that Trump's latest efforts are not good enough.
According to Judge Derrick Watson's opinion in Hawaii v. Trump , the latest round of changes to Trump's ban are not significant enough to rescue it from the same legal attacks that placed the previous version of the ban in legal jeopardy. Watson handed down a temporary order on halting the ban.
This round of litigation concerns the...

Hawaii judge blocks Trump's third travel ban

4 monthes ago   |   By

A federal judge in Hawaii has blocked President Donald Trump's revised travel ban one day before it was set to take effect. Judge Derrick Watson said the travel ban - Trump's third version of the policy - “plainly discriminates based on nationality.” The President's executive order “suffers from precisely the same maladies as its predecessor: it lacks sufficient findings that the entry of more than 150 million nationals from six specified countries would be ‘detrimental to the interests of the United States,'” Watson wrote....

U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson granted Hawaii's request to temporarily block the policy that was to be implemented starting early Wednesday. He found Trump's executive order "suffers from precisely the same maladies as its predecessor."
