Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Comes To Minneapolis

30 days ago   |   By

MINNEAPOLIS - The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is in the Twin Cities today for a discussion about his job.
Justice John Roberts was a guest at the University of Minnesota Law School as part of the school's Stein Lecture series.
Roberts answered questions from current law students about the nation's highest court. He says he doesn't want to comment on the legislative branch of the government because they represent the people.
The 63-year-old was nominated by President George W. Bush after the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist in 2005.

MeToo, Kavanaugh topics of talk at women filmmakers' event

30 days ago   |   By

NEW YORK - The midterm elections, MeToo, and the recent confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court: All were key topics of discussion at an annual gathering for women filmmakers Tuesday in Manhattan.
“Nevertheless, we persisted,” intoned Jane Rosenthal, executive chair of Tribeca Enterprises, using the popular feminist slogan over and over as she discussed a year of women's struggles, both inside and outside Hollywood.
The gathering took place almost exactly a year after the MeToo movement erupted into public consciousness, following stunning allegations of sexual...

History Will Judge John Roberts if His Court's Steady Stream of 5-4 Pro-GOP Decisions Continues

30 days ago   |   By

As Justice Brett Kavanaugh takes his seat on the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts's job just got harder. Roberts, who claims to be protective of the court's role as an impartial arbiter of law, now must welcome a colleague saddled with “credible” and “compelling” allegations of sexual assault ( according to President Donald Trump himself ) and marred by serious, unresolved questions about his candor, judicial temperament, and partisanship.

'Everywhere we went, we had to worry about our safety': Female students who attended Yale in the 1980s describe the culture around sexual misconduct amid Brett Kavanaugh allegations

The FBI has investigated allegations that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was just confirmed to the court earlier this month, sexually assaulted two women in the 1980s.
For women who came of age in the 1980s, it's bringing back some painful memories about the prevalence of sexual assault, and how survivors weren't always believed or supported when they came forward.
Business Insider interviewed three people who attended Yale University at the same time as Kavanaugh and Ramirez who shared their recollections.
The controversy and FBI investigation into sexual assault allegations...

How to Fix the Supreme Court: Weaken It

30 days ago   |   By

The confirmation of a Supreme Court justice never should matter as much as Brett Kavanaugh's did, and that's because the Supreme Court itself shouldn't matter as much as it does today. That's the conclusion of many legal observers-me included-after witnessing the partisan warfare in Washington over the past three months. In a New York Times op-ed last week, Pepperdine University law professor Barry P. McDonald wrote that the Kavanaugh hearings reflected the “unfortunate fact” that the “court has become a political actor that wields excessive power in our democracy.” “Americans have become...
