An engine failure that forced Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 to make an emergency landing has left one person dead, making it the first fatality on a U.S. airline in nine years.

PHILADELPHIA - A Southwest Airlines jet apparently blew an engine at 30,000 feet and got hit by shrapnel that smashed a window and damaged the fuselage Tuesday, killing a passenger and injuring seven others, authorities said. A Southwest Airlines Co. jetliner made an emergency landing in Philadelphia International Airport after an engine blew out, forcing the suspension of flights in and out of the airport.
The cabin depressurized when engine debris broke a window, according to an NBC affiliate. A woman was drawn toward the hole, the affiliate said, citing a relative of a passenger.
